For years Local 47 has offered seminars, courses, conferences and symposiums, classes and jam sessions. Generally, classes are offered free to members; occasionally materials and/or recording fees have applied. We are currently seeking new ideas and proposals for additional classes/seminars/etc. which would enrich and help develop the skills of Local 47 members.

Current and recent offerings have included:

Orchestration Class – Going through four families of orchestral instruments (strings, woodwinds, brass and percussion) teaching students the concept of bowings, how to mark in phrases for instruments, and transposition and ranges.

Advanced Orchestration Class – Looking at contemporary styles of music, students deal with composition and elements of form, score study, analysis of different composers' methods of orchestration, and score reduction. At the end of the course each student is given the opportunity to write a short work which is then recorded by a professional seven-piece ensemble.

LAUSD Music Appreciation Class – Taught in conjunction with the Hollywood Community Adult School, this weekly class based around instrumental and choral performance teaches students how to sight-read music as well as learn about other aspects of the music business, including copyright law, the role of contractors, etc. and also offers Fine Arts credits to students.

'Finale' Class – Three-week course teaching the Finale music composing and notation software.

Local 47 Jam Session – Monthly jam session open to members, family and friends.

Independent Music Conference – Focused on networking, teaching the ins and outs of the industry, and showcasing talent.

Master Classes – Presented by the Los Angeles Violincello Society, past guests have included Yo Yo Ma, Lynn Harrell, and Bernard Greenhouse.

Orchestral Workout — Audition prep sessions.

BMI Conducting Workshop – Annual event teaching aspiring composers how to work with orchestras from the ground level up.

Seminars covering a variety of subjects from marketing and promoting your CD, long-term health care, how to incorporate, and mortgages.
